Could you help SPEAK grow the next chapter of our prayer, campaigning and creative justice network?

SPEAK is looking for people to join our Support & Volunteer Team, with the possibility of eventually becoming either a Director supporting our campaigning work or a Trustee supporting our charitable education, training, events and network work.
SPEAK’s work is supported through two different legal structures, working alongside one another:
- A socially conscious, not-for-profit company
Supporting SPEAK’s campaigning, activism and campaign resources. We are looking for people who could potentially become Directors of the company and help develop and oversee this campaigning work.
- NEST: Network Event Support and Training
The charitable structure supporting SPEAK’s wider education, training, events, network-building and charitable activities. We are looking for people who could potentially become Trustees of the charity.
Both structures support different but connected parts of the wider SPEAK vision, and we need people with different gifts, backgrounds and experience to help us develop them.
Start by volunteering with us
Rather than asking people to become Directors or Trustees straight away, we’d love potential candidates to spend some time volunteering alongside us, ideally for around 12–18 months.
This gives you a chance to get to know SPEAK, our values and our way of working, and gives us a chance to get to know you too.
After that period, if it feels like a good fit on both sides, we can explore whether becoming a Director of the not-for-profit campaigning company or a Trustee of NEST might be the right next step.
Two possible pathways
You don’t need to decide at the beginning whether you’re interested in becoming a Director or Trustee. Volunteering together gives us time to explore where your gifts and interests might fit.
Campaigns Director
You might eventually be interested in becoming a Director of the socially conscious, not-for-profit company supporting SPEAK’s campaigning work.
This could particularly suit someone interested in campaigning, peaceful activism, communications, campaign resources, digital media, creative campaigning or developing partnerships around social and global justice issues.
NEST / SPEAK NEST Trustee
Alternatively, you might eventually be interested in becoming a Trustee of NEST: Network Event Support and Training, the charitable structure supporting our education, training, events and wider network-building work.
This could particularly suit someone interested in charity education and training, youth and community engagement, events, network development, fundraising or organisational support.
There is plenty of crossover between the two, and both are part of supporting the wider SPEAK community and vision.
What would be involved?
We are running a much simpler, more grassroots operation than SPEAK did in previous years, but we still want to equip people across the UK to pray, campaign and take action for justice.
We are looking for volunteers who can normally offer a few hours a week, depending on availability, plus one Trustee Support Team meeting each term via Zoom.
There are lots of different ways you could contribute. These might include:
- helping research, write and develop campaign and prayer resources;
- adapting our traditional Pray & Post resources for today’s audiences;
- helping create accessible multimedia resources, including short videos and video prayer postcards;
- contributing to blogs, social media and website content;
- finding and encouraging other people to contribute blogs, prayers, creative content or campaign material;
- helping develop regular, simple prayer and campaigning actions that people can take part in wherever they live;
- reconnecting with and supporting SPEAK Links and representatives around the UK;
- helping SPEAK grow its network and involve a new generation in prayer and action for global justice.
Our recent Pray & Post work continues SPEAK’s tradition of combining accessible information, prayer and practical campaigning around issues such as the arms trade and peace.
Could you eventually become a SPEAK trustee?
Possibly, and we’d love to explore that together.
Joining the Trustee Support Team is an opportunity for us to work alongside one another before either side makes that commitment. After a period of volunteering, there may be an opportunity to discuss joining the Board of Trustees if it feels like a good fit for you and for SPEAK.
You don’t need to arrive knowing everything about charity governance. More important is that you connect with SPEAK’s Christian commitment to prayer, justice and peaceful action, are willing to work collaboratively, and want to contribute your gifts.
We particularly welcome people who can bring skills or experience in areas such as campaigning, communications, social media, video and multimedia, writing, fundraising, youth engagement, community organising, charity governance or administration.
